JSOC: Joint Special Operations Command

We live in a world full of threats. threats which the common people aren't aware of. And to protect the people and nation from such threats, there are agencies who works round the clock. We have heard of the countries being very strong in their defence. There are organisations which make the defence of a country strong.

US Govt. has sanctioned many agencies to take care of the national security. There are so many divisions inside US defence ministry which looks after the threat to the national security. Talk about CIA or FBI, there are many more behind the scene which we haven’t even heard off! But to work together, we need a body which can guide all these separate agencies to make them work together. To carry out any operations which may require assistance from more than one agencies or which may be involving more than one agencies. Also, specially trained soldiers, team of experts, people especially trained for high profile operations and technical equipment, latest technology and all other requirement which is needed to make a team of special commandos. To form such a special unit, US government formed a special unit which is called JSOC-Joint Special Operation Command.

JSOC is a special operation force, which has carried out many high level secret operations till date. It was establish in 1980. Its head-quarters is located at North Carolina. JSOC main purpose is to get all the resources required to carry out a mission. It take care of all exchange of resources including especially trained soldiers for high level operations, intelligence reports which are necessary for the secret operation, classified data, equipment that will be helpful in the war and everything that is required. It also helps in co-ordinating among the different defence agencies of US. It does a complete background preparations necessary for the task. So far, only three teams of JSOC has been made public. The Army’s Delta-1st Special Forces Operational Detachment, Navy’s Special Warfare Development Group(DEVGRU)- SEAL( Sea Air and Land) Team Six and Air Force’s 24th Special Tactics Squadron.

The activities undertaken by JSOC are highly classified. Most of the agencies recruits members from JSOC for their special operations. Also the Intelligence support activity (ISA) comes under JSOC. ISA’s primary work is to provide the units with all the intelligence reports during to the mission. Not only secret missions, but JSOC also looks after the internal threat to the country especially during elections and international events like the world cups, Olympics.

Soon after the formation of JSOC, its first operation,” Operation Urgent Fury” came during the 1983. JSOC carried out the operation with commandos of US Delta force, Navy Seals and US Marines. They defeated the military government and restored the constitutional government. Major crises aroused in gulf countries in 1990 when Iraq started invading Kuwait which is famous as “Gulf War”. A coalition force compromising of 34 nations stood up against this illegal invasion of Iraq on Kuwait. This whole operation, codenamed as,” Operation Desert Storm” led by US forced the Iraqi to move out of Kuwait after they lost the conflict between the armies from both the sides. It soon followed up by “Operation Provide Comfort” to establish a safe environment in northern Iraq. US’s Special Forces provided security to for the people living over there.

The work of securing peace and providing security from invasion and establishing government became a routine work for these special forces as once again during 1995, US’s special team of Navy, coast guard and Air force, got together to overthrow the military government in island country of Haiti, a Caribbean country. This “Operation Uphold Democracy”, which lasted from sept ’94 to march ’95, defeated the rebels and reinstated the elected government. Then came the 9/11 attack which took whole US by storm. Within a month, US launch “Operation Enduring Freedom”, to catch Osama Bin Laden. The Special Forces managed to throw Taliban out of power. They established military bases near Afghanistan to maintain peacefull environment in the Taliban country. Later the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) took over and managed the situation over there

So far, 13 highly classified operations has carried out in the countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Somalia and Yemen by the JSOC. The most famous being the “Operation Neptune sphere”, where they killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama-bin-Laden. With zero confidence in Pakistan’s defence forces to assist for successful raid over Osama, US’s special Team of SEAL soldiers carried this whole operation on their own. On May 2 midnight, JSOC with a special team of SEALs commandos, raided the secret residence of Osama Bin Laden, in Abbottabad and killed him.

Similar raids were carried out in Afghanistan too. In Iraq, to fight against the terror groups, JSOC team conducted cross border operations to destroy groups providing weapons to terrorists. In Iran, similar operations were carried out to crush the Al-Qaeda members and high value targets.

These all operations are among those which has been known to public. There may be many more highly classified operations conducted by JSOC which haven’t been made public owing to the US National Security. US government knows how important it is for the defence agencies to work together. They make sure that all the defence agencies are working with each other to protect the National Security. Organisations like JSOC, with all experts and well trained soldiers, makes a lot of difference. Such Special Operation Command are very important to fight and execute special operation mission world-wide and protect the Nation at the same time
