Satya Nadella: India’s Loss to western Giants.

Satya Nadella; the newly appointed CEO at Microsoft has lighted up smile on faces of millions of Indian all over the globe. And why not! After all an Indian is going to manage the software computing giant. As an Indian I feel so proud right now.  A Graduate in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from MIT (Manipal Institute of Technology) Karnataka. In pursuit to achieve his dreams, he moved to US to do his masters in computer science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Later, he did his MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He started working at sun-microsystems initially and finally joined Microsoft in 1992. He worked on various projects and carrying out many research and development tasks including the cloud computing, making huge profits for his company. Backed by his innovative and excellent talent; finally got to the top position at Microsoft. He was made CEO of Microsoft in 2014.

Feels amazing to see an Indian being made the CEO of Microsoft! Doesn’t it? Considering the current situation we live in India, where we expect guys from top institutes like IITs to get there. But Mr Satya Nadella has proved the odds wrong completely. Hard work always pays you back handsomely.

But, a question in my mind is troubling me from the day I heard of him being made the CEO. Something that we all should look upon. What if Mr Nadella didn’t go to US and worked at Indian firm? How big difference would he had made to India’s position in computing world had he been working here itself!  I may be wrong from globalization point of view.  But as far as development and progress of India is concerned, it’s a loss for a nation if worthy people like Mr Nadella goes to some other country. But, also we cannot blame one guy or one part of our Indian society or system for this. It’s something beyond our imagination to figure out such matters.  Many factors, directly and indirectly, are responsible for this. Today with globalization at peaks and multi-national firms established so well, it can’t be controlled.

Personally, everyone wants to fulfil their dreams and they are ready to go anywhere it takes to get it. Satya Nadella went to US because he believed that he won’t get that amount of opportunity here in India. Fair enough! But what if he came back after completing his degree and worked here for his own country.  Many people don’t look up to this. If it was just about not getting proper scope of doing things in India, he should had come back after competing his degree and started his own firm to fulfil that void in Indian society. It is very annoying that we criticize the voids we see in us but do nothing to fill it. It’s a huge loss for India that they lost Satya Nadella to the West because of lack of scopes. Globally, I may sound completely wrong but somewhere, it does affect India’s global posture in field of technology. What a difference he would had made here! He would have taken India to new heights in field of technology.

It’s not just about one man. Many Indian scholars and scientist are working in many countries. We all have duties and responsibilities towards our nation. We take oath to serve the country but with time, we move where we find a ready-made scope to get a better life. We have lots of problems in Indian system but that should not discourage us from working towards the development of our nation.
To make it a bit clearer, think this way. If guys like Nadella, prefers to work for some other countries, younger generations will get inspired by it and will dream of going abroad someday. Result, we are losing good people again. Next, because of lack of scope and opportunity, talented people leave the country. Result, it harms to Indian firms where they really need talented guys to work for them. That hurts by the fact that their ideas which should be used here, will now be used in some other country. Next major thing is that, demand of jobs increasing day by day because of which people are opting to go out. Result, Indian firms are losing the services of hard working Indians. Next, many people who have ideas and are willing to start-up their own firm, opt to go out in search of better opportunity to establish their firm over there. Result, the pool of firms and jobs get affected as there is no one to start-up new firms and offer jobs. Next is the quality. It’s very important to have good quality of people working for the company in order to compete with rising competitions. Result, as good quality people go out, we are left with a bit lesser ones. Each and every factor, small or big, affects a lot in longer runs.

We should understand that if we take chance and work here, it may ask for big sacrifices initially, but later on, both the nation and national standards will get benefit of it. Future will really prosper. It’s time to think a bit before choosing alternative country to offer our services and benefit them rather than developing own nation.
